HTML5 Web Messaging API Demo: Multi-window 2D Canvas Game

A demo of part of an HTML5 game I'm developing for a book I'm writing for Packt Publishing. The video demonstrates how to pass messages back and forth between windows from different origins. Here I have a parent host window that spawns three child windows. These windows have a canvas that draws a block somewhere specified by the parent windows. The parent window moves the block around the complete world space, then tells each window to display the block within its own localized world space. If the cube is not within drawing range of one of the windows, that window is told not to draw anything. --- Cross-document messaging: --- Web browsers, for security and privacy reasons, prevent documents in different domains from affecting each other; that is, cross-site scripting is disallowed. While this is an important security feature, it prevents pages from different domains from communicating even when those pages are not hostile. This section introduces a messaging system that allows documents to communicate with each other regardless of their source domain, in a way designed to not enable cross-site scripting attacks. The task source for the tasks in cross-document messaging is the posted message task source. For example, if document A contains an iframe element that contains document B, and script in document A calls postMessage() on the Window object of document B, then a message event will be fired on that object, marked as originating from the Window of document A. The script in document A might look like: var o = document.getElementsByTagName('iframe')[ 0]; o.contentWindow.postMessage('Hello world', ' ing events, the script would use addEventListener() (or similar mechanisms). For example, the script in document B might look like: window.addEventListener('message', receiver, false); function receiver(e) { if (e.origin == ' ' ) { if (e.data == 'Hello world') { e.source.postMessage('Hello', e.origin); } else { alert(e.data); } } } This script first checks the domain is the expected domain, and then looks at the message, which it either displays to the user, or responds to by sending a message back to the document which sent the message in the first place. window . postMessage(message, targetOrigin [, transfer ]) Posts a message to the given window. Messages can be structured objects, e.g. nested objects and arrays, can contain JavaScript values (strings, numbers, Dates, etc), and can contain certain data objects such as File Blob, FileList, and ArrayBuffer objects. Objects listed in transfer are transferred, not just cloned, meaning that they are no longer usable on the sending side. If the origin of the target window doesn't match the given origin, the message is discarded, to avoid information leakage. To send the message to the target regardless of origin, set the target origin to "*". To restrict the message to same-origin targets only, without needing to explicitly state the origin, set the target origin to "/". Throws a DataCloneError if transfer array contains duplicate objects or if message could not be cloned. Note: When a script invokes the postMessage(message, targetOrigin, transfer) method (with two or three arguments) on a Window object, the user agent must follow these steps: (Source:

Descripcion del Video
If you are a marketer, HTML 5 must be the key technology on your strategic road map A real game-changer for businesses, HTML5 has already transformed many business models, and now it is changing how marketers are reaching their target audiences through rich interaction and via multiple online and offline channels. Below is why. The Move to Mobile In a new world of rising competition and shrinking budgets, marketers find it increasingly difficult to reach and stay connected with their target audiences. This is especially true now when we see that consumers are quickly moving into mobile environments. Here are some interesting facts on Mobile use from our friends at mobithinking (mobithinking.com/mobile-marketing-tools /latest-mobile-stats): • Half a billion people accessed mobile Internet worldwide in 2009. Usage is expected to double within five years as mobile overtakes the PC as the most popular way to get on the Web. • Many mobile Web users are mobile-only, i.e. they do not, or very rarely use a desktop, laptop or tablet to access the Web. Even in the US 25 percent of mobile. If a marketer wants to have a greater impact on his target audience, interaction must be spread across multiple platforms. For this to happen, they must develop applications for computer browsers (Websites) as well as for major mobile platforms: Apple, Android, BlackBerry and Symbian. That in turn is extremely expensive. But not anymore thanks to HTML 5... Advantages of using HTML 5 on your next Web and Mobile Projects If you find yourself struggling to decide which platform(s) to develop for, or concerned about the future landscape of the Internet, here are the main advantages to using HTML5 on your next corporate Website and Mobile App development projects: • Compatibility - Across multiple platforms such as Web, iPhone/iPad (iOS), Android , Blackberry, Windows Phone and Desktop and browsers including Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer 9 to some extent • Cheaper -- Developing several native apps for the major five mobile platforms is expensive. With HTML5, it's now possible to develop one version of your application that works across all these platforms • Better Visuals - More fluid animations, effects, streaming video, music and integration with Social Network sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn as well as desktop-like functional applications • Geolocation - Geolocation API's directly available to any HTML 5-compatible browser-based application • No Need for Internet! - Offline application HTTP cache that makes applications available even when there's no Internet connection • Standard on the Rise - Supporters include as Apple, Microsoft and Google HTML5 is a great choice for Web and mobile development in the current market conditions. But in the bigger picture, HTML5 could benefit marketers by delivering unprecedented accessibility for rich information to their customers.

Web site (adducation.org) HTML5 is The New HTML Standard What is HTML5? HTML5 (HyperText Markup Language version 5) is the fifth major revision of the core language of the World Wide Web, HTML. HTML5 specifies two variants of syntax to HTML: a "classic" HTML (text / html), the variant known as HTML5 and XHTML variant known as XHTML5 syntax that must be served as XML (XHTML) (application / xhtml + xml). This is the first time that HTML and XHTML have been developed in parallel. It is still in experimental mode, which indicates the W3C itself, although it is used by many web developers for its advances, improvements and advantages. Not being recognized in older versions of browsers for their new label, the user is encouraged to upgrade to the common newer version in order to enjoy the full potential that HTML5 provides.
