how to fix Youtube HTML5 vs FLASH speed problem - read the comment !

How to disable the HTML5 player in Firefox and get your Youtube video speed back, especially on older machines playing higher resolutions or fullscreen. At the moment Youtube is testing a HTML5 video player (I should say Youtube is trying to enforce the use of HTML5 players in browsers instead of FLASH). The background of the story also seems to be that Youtube (Google) wants to push their own WEBM videocontainer format (using VP8 codec) instead of the widely spread and well developed H264. Shame ! Basically HTML5 embedded video is not a bad idea, but the implementation of these video formats and codecs in browsers is optimized for new hardware. As a result older computers can play videos in flash player without problems, but in HTML5 they get big trouble. Issues of HTML5 implementations: 1) on my current computer (quadcore) the HTML5 player is sluggish, video gets out of sync easily. Moving the mouse over the video or any controls makes the video stop for 1 second. 2) on my old notebook (can play blurays) anything higher than 360p stutters terribly, fullscreen is impossible in any resolution (too slow). HTML5 player eats CPU power like candy. But I can watch Youtube 720p or 1080p on my old notebook in flash player without problems. 3) Youtube or the browser do not give you any means to decide which player should be used. 4) with every video the player may change ! so it gets even more difficult to understand where the problem comes from. So if you recently got speed issues in Youtube, then disabling the HTML5 player in Firefox may fix this problem. You can check which player is running by RIGHT-clicking into any playing video. look at the lowest line of the popup menu. 1) if it says anything about adobe, then it is the flash player. 2) if it says anything about HTML5, then it's ... HTML5 ! To disable HTML5 player in Firefox do the following: 1) type "about:config" in the address bar 2) go to the "media.webm.enabled" setting and 3) change it to "false" by simply doubleclicking it From now on Firefox will use only the flash player for Youtube videos. For quite a while now it also works if you right click into a html 5 video, select 'more about html5' and use the disable (or opt out) button on the webpage. it will set a cookie so html5 will not be used anymore. to make this work you need cookies ! I hope this is only a temporary problem of HTML5. Worst case could be that poor programming will again wreck millions of otherwise perfectly speedy, useful and Youtube capable computers. Youtube (Google), Mozilla, don't let it happen !!! WEBM implementations still suck and are too slow. ADDENDUM 2013 ! : with firefox 18 and HTML5 on youtube I have no more issues. everything I complained about before is gone. now I have very low cpu consumption even in 1080. screen size changes or moving mouse over the controls does not lead to stutter at all, everything is smooth now. in fact even more smooth than flash ! well done Mozilla :o) that's the way it should be. even loads faster than flash. HTML5 will however not give 240p resolution which is still necessary for some slow DSL (like mine, I only have between 512 and 768 kbit :o() Hopefully I can declare this video obsolete :o) If this solved your problem, please give it a LIKE :o)

HTML5 vs Adobe Flash Player 10
Descripcion del Video
HTML5 vs Adobe Flash player 10 in CPU usage. I am testing it to see which has good performance. I also tested this in a singled-core CPU. If you have a Dual-core or better feel free to post a video response. Testing: HTML5 seems to take more CPU power than Flash using Google Chrome. I tested using two HTML5 videos and one video with Flash. Note: Can iPad can watch YouTube videos, but only in HTML5. ******** Google Chrome 5.0 Mobile AMD Sempron 3600+ 2.0 GHz Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
